Headteacher's welcome

Headteacher

These are exciting times at Vandyke.  Please find our Vision and Values statement by clicking on this link

The following illustrate the school's continuing success in providing an excellent all-round education for our students and excellent exam outcomes.

1. GCSE results in 2016 and again in 2017 are strong, with students making very good progress in their time here.  We encourage students to follow challenging courses of study with a focus on the core subjects of English, maths and science and history, geography and modern foreign languages.  The Government’s measure of achievement in these key subjects is the EBacc and Vandyke students’ performance in the EBacc is26%, well above the national average.  For more details about GCSE results in 2016 click here and for 2017 click here.

2. In 2016 A Level results improved again with students making outstanding progress (in DfE performance tables, value-added is 'significantly positive' and ALPS is grade 3).  For more details about 2016 A level results click here.  In 2017 results are again exellent with average ponts per entry 33.1, 100% pass rate and ALPS 3 (top 15% performance nationally).  For more details on 2017 A level results, please click here.

3. We have outstanding study/library, PE, drama and music facilities and the ground-breaking Vandyke Café that brings the high street café culture into school. We have continued to improve facilities by installing an astro-turf pitch, adding further ICT labs and installing digital projectors/ interactive whiteboards into classrooms.

4. As a popular and successful school, Vandyke was asked by Central Beds Council to provide additional places.  This work has been completed, providing 200 new places, including new classrooms, new PE changing rooms, a new Achievement & Inclusion hub and spectacular new social space.

5. The school's work encouraging healthy lifestyles was recognised through the Healthy Schools Award and Vandyke staff and students featured at the National Healthy Schools conference.  As an academy we have insisted that our catering contracts require compliance with the latest government healthy eating guidelines.

6. Student trips last year took place to USA, France, Germany, Iceland and China (2016 to India). We are proud to support Leighton Buzzard’s Fair Trade Town status - the Vandyke Café serves only Fairtrade tea and coffee.

7. Each year Sixth Form students gain places on a wide range of degree courses including at Oxford, Cambridge and other prestigious universities here and abroad, at a range of local colleges and universities, and on apprenticeships to meet individual aspirations and career ambitions.

8. The range of student leadership opportunities continues to grow and student voice activity across the school is held up as a model of good practice. Students organise our successful Smile Week, raising money for the school’s long term charity, Smile Malawi. Our Senior Student team in the sixth form plays an active role in the wider life of the school.  Our School Forum is a key part of student voice.  Students are leading a 'well-being Wednesday' initiative, which is a terrific example of student voice in action.

9. Vandyke has been recognised for our programme of opportunities in sports and performing arts. We aim for every student to be engaged in the programme and through this to develop skills in working with others and leadership, personal resilience and resourcefulness.  Performing Arts provision is through our innovative Arts Factory and comprehensive Year 9 enrichment through our 'V Inspired' programme.

In 2014 the Vandyke chess teams were the Bedfordshire Schools champions in both secondary school categories, as recognised by the English Chess Federation (ECF), and the school is now graded to run ECF tournaments.  In March 2015 Vandyke again reached the regional final of the Rotary Club Youth Speaks public speaking competition and in 2016 the semi-final stage.  The Duke of Edinburgh award scheme has a big role in school and we currently have 90 students participating.

10. The most recent Ofsted inspection in March 2015 judged the school to be 'good' in all categories.  Among the judgements, inspectors wrote that "students achieve well in a wide range of subjects at Key Stage 4", "students in the sixth form make good progress and achieve well", "students are very proud of their academy" and "they behave well and display highly constructive attitudes to their learning."  To read the inspection report, please click here.

We continue to build on our successes and have set challenging targets again this year for examination performance and to improve further the quality of our students' experience and the opportunities available to them.
